Saving Water in 21 Ways
23.01.2023
A drought is not expected in Istanbul in a short period of time. Yet, İSKİ specifies that, regardless of how full the dams are, the consumption habits have to change in the wake of global climate change and the drought accompanied by it.
Global climate change and drought increase the importance of the water, which is not an unlimited resource, around the globe even further. Water per capita is constantly decreasing in our country year over year as well. The amount, which was 1,652 m3 in 2000, decreased to 1,544 in 2009, and to 1,346 m3 in 2020. If the estimation of TÜİK (Turkish Statistical Institute) comes true, where there shall be a population of 100 million in 2030, water per capita will decrease to 1,120 m3.
İSKİ PROTECTING ISTANBUL’S WATER
Providing water uninterruptedly 365 days a year and 24 hours a day, İSKİ takes precautions already now in the face of this scenario. İSKİ successfully managed to decrease water leakage rates to its lowest levels observed in the last 20 years, and is continuing to gain recycled water by treating the wastewater. İSKİ keeps on protecting the water resources of the city and on carrying out research to utilize these resources more efficiently.
DROUGHT IS NOT EXPECTED IN ISTANBUL IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME
It is of utmost importance that residents of Istanbul change their water consumption habits in order to make contributions to İSKİ’s works. A drought is not expected in Istanbul in a short period of time, whereas in order to be protected from the impacts of global climate change, water needs to be conserved, regardless of how full the dams are.
21 WAYS FOR SAVING WATER BY İSKİ
İSKİ’s conservation recommendations, which would help reduce water waste as well as make contributions to family budget of Istanbulites, consist of the following:
-
Remember that the 70% of water waste at home occurs in toilets and bathrooms.
-
Repair your taps that are dripping out. This prevents the waste which may be as high as 6 tons a year.
-
Turn the valves below your taps down a little or install an aerator onto your tap knobs. This saves 50% of running water.
-
Remember that a leaking toilet reservoir may waste as much as 700 liters in a single day.
-
If feasible, replace your toilet tanks with low-capacity models.
-
Reduce the time you spend while taking a bath by 1 minute. This saves 16 tons of water on average in a year.
-
Do not leave the water running while lathering up during taking a bath.
-
Do not leave the tap running while washing your hands and face or shaving. Remember that if you wash your hand while leaving the tap running, 75% of water is wasted.
-
Collect the water that is running while you’re waiting for the boiler to heat it up in a container and use it for your other needs.
-
Do not operate your washing machine and dishwasher without completely filling them.
-
Do your dishes in a machine instead of doing them by hand. This prevents 110 liters of water from being wasted each washing.
-
Wash your clothes in a machine instead of washing them by hand. This saves 9 tons of water on average in a year.
-
Wash vegetables and fruits in a container instead of under running water.
-
Household treatment devices consume a few times more water than they produce. If you are using that kind of device, collect the outlet water and use it for cleaning purposes. Remember that the water İSKİ provides to Istanbul is healthy and safe if novel domestic plumbing is installed or if the tanks, if there is any, are cleaned at least once in 6 months.
-
If you’re watering the plants, do it in the morning or at noon to prevent losses occurring due to evaporation. Remember that the strongest management against agricultural drought is to use drip irrigation system.
-
Wash your vehicles with a bucket and brush instead of running water.
-
Consider wiping your carpets instead of washing them if possible.
-
Report the water leakages you come across to İSKİ.
-
Remember that water is used in production of any material you consume. Any wasted product contributes to water loss.
-
Switch to Digital Billing that delivers you the İSKİ bills via SMS or e-mail instead of receiving printed bills. You may quickly submit your application online via https://www.iski.istanbul/dijital-fatura-talep and save the water required for bill papers.
-
Make a habit out of anything you do for the sake of saving. This will enable you to make savings for an entire life.
